2010 The Plan is a list of things that will fail
Uncovering potential in the problems of Chisinau’s environment
In the book East Coast Europe, Berlin based architect and writer Markus Miessen notices that aside from economical and political differences, Europe is still divided by the symbolic border of possibilities. In fact the more one moves East – the more is possible. At a time when Moldova is one of the strongest new candidates for membership of the EU, the research and workshop will focus on the alterplans, alterotopias (places built and shared with others), and the potential hidden within such problems as political instability, derelict industrial zones or even the dominance of cars. If apparently ‘successful’ masterplans consume a place’s potential, is it the mistakes that create new possibilities? How can the failure of one plan open the door for unimagined alternatives? We will look for errors, cracks, and loopholes in Chisinau’s built environment, and investigate their subversive and performative potential. We would like to collect your suggestions and observations on the potentiality of the failures, bad plans, and incorrect decisions - having a look at Chisinau as a place where two wrongs might actually make a right. The workshop is open for architects, artists and anyone concerned with the city Joanna Warsza (PL) & Finn Williams (UK) Research, public presentations and workshops on things that go wrong 3-11 December 2010, CHIOSC / Chisinau / Moldova on the invitation of Vladimir US / Oberliht and The Polish Institut Bucarest
